Currently, the Resource Management Act is frustrating for homeowners, farmers and businesses.  The process of obtaining a consent is long and trying, and it often takes longer to get consent, especially for large projects, than it does to carry out the project.

National supports the underlying principles of the RMA – sustainable management, integrated decision making, and an effects-based approach. Long-term environmental planning will play an important part in helping our economy grow.

Our changes strike a sensible balance between reducing bureaucracy and ensuring proper process and environmental protection and the Bill containing these changes has just been reported back to the House.

For those interested in the changes, a public meeting will be held in Invercargill on 23 September.  If you want to go, register at www.rma.govt.nz by September 11.
