As I said earlier this year, the Southland Stags have shown what can be done when everyone is working to a common achievable goal.  While the loss on Saturday to Wellington was disappointing, it was still a laudable achievement for a province that only a few years ago was struggling to match it with the top sides.

We beat three out of the five Super 14 franchises!  We had the best defensive record.  And hopefully we’ll finally see our boys properly recognized in the Highlanders team when it is announced for 2010.

The competition also showed that while John Key might be heading New Zealand Incorporated, Rugby Southland has done a fantastic job pulling together the entire community in Team Southland and showing the rest of New Zealand how we consistently fight above our weight category.

The publicity Southland has garnered on the back of the Stags has been sensational.  They are a credit to the province.
