The news of the Iroquois helicopter crash on ANZAC Day was particularly saddening, coming on a day when we remembered those who had fought and served their country and the world.

Aside from Willie Apiata in downtown Kabul, the work our armed forces do goes unnoticed.  We have soldiers, naval personnel, and Air Force staff all over the world contributing to peace, reconstruction, or policing.

The work done by our Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan has made a huge difference to that country.

Some don’t really understand the work done by our troops, or their efforts in bringing stability to different regions in the Pacific and overseas.  The air force pilots and crew killed in the Iroqouis crash were just like the rest of the responsive NZ Defence Force, getting on with what needed to be done.

Any death is sad.  These were particularly poignant given the mission and the occasion.
