It’s amazing seeing the innovative uses companies find for waste products.  For example, whey left over from the cheesemaking process can be used to make microbial fuel cells.

Sewage can be re-used or recycled into a range of fuels, and work is proceeding at pace on electricity generation from many waste products.

In Southland, farmers know the importance of looking after the environment and thanks to local innovations, are better able to manage their waste.

We are all concerned about ensuring we maintain our clean, green image.  The announcement of the new Environmental Protection Agency last week by Nick Smith gives us a national monitoring and expertise base to make this happen.

The EPA will make sure of the protection of our environment at a national level, as well as assisting with the development of clean and green technologies.
