The National Air Quality standards may be relaxed.

The existing standard of only one exceedance of the standards a year is unrealistic and would require banning home log burners and industries in communities where air quality is generally very good. This decision by the previous Government was against the Environment Ministry’s recommendation of five exceedances per year.

More importantly, New Zealand as a whole has better air quality than other nations and these minor changes to the Standards will save 17,000 jobs put at risk by Labour’s changes.

The other key thing to remember is it is the Government’s priority to come up with clean solutions so we can meet our obligations on greenhouse gas emissions.  So while the Standard might be relaxed, we are at the same time working with science and business to enhance this environment.
