News the Southland Sharks basketballers made the national playoffs in their first season and the Steel made the trans-tasman netball semi-finals are more great examples of Southland’s contribution to New Zealand sport.

We have the Ranfurly Shield, one of the best netball teams in Australasia (if not the world), world-class cyclists and now a new southern sporting icon in the Sharks.

While their success is testament to the work of a lot of people, community funders, and from what I have heard, the most vociferous fans, it’s also another indication that our teams are never to be taken lightly.

Could we be entering another golden era for Southland sport?

By the time you read this, the Sharks’ fate in the playoffs could be over, but the Steel are still in the hunt.  No matter what happens, both have done us all proud.  Now roll on the season-long defence of that Ranfurly Shield!
