Did you know that, over New Zealand:

  • During the weekend, about 7 out of 10 people at A&E are there because of alcohol.
  • Alcohol plays a part in 30 per cent of all offences, 34 per cent of family violence, and one in every two homicides.
  • In 2009, 34 of 88 road fatalities were caused by drunk drivers with a previous conviction.
  • 50 of the 88 deaths were caused by drivers at least twice the legal limit.

That’s why the Government has introduced legislation to target drink-drivers and their high contribution to the fatality statistics.

Doubling the penalty for dangerous driving causing death is just one aspect.  Having convicted drink-drivers subject to a zero-alcohol limit for three years after they get their licence back is another.  We need to do something about our shameful drink-driving record.  This is a good start.
