The issues around Waituna Lagoon have brought freshwater management to the fore in Southland.

After 18 public meetings involving 1200 people, 58 interest groups and consulting a wide range of stakeholders, the Land and Water Forum has presented its Fresh Start for Freshwater report to Government.

Better freshwater management is critical to our primary industries, our great Kiwi lifestyle, our tourism industry, our clean environment, and to the electricity sector. Those competing interests make the job difficult but the Land and Water Forum shows these groups are working together and want Government to make improvements.

It is not going to be an overnight change to freshwater management, but this report gives us a way to move forward and address the pressing needs in freshwater management  and Waituna.
