Like many other Southlanders, I’ll be spending this Saturday morning opening the 2011 duckshooting season in a maimai somewhere.

Duckshooting is a big thing down here.  Sports are re-scheduled, preparations begin months out, and the search for the perfect spot occupies the shooter’s mind for some time.

Recently the Minister of Conservation announced the formation of a Game Animal Council.  The Council’s functions will relate to the management of tahr, chamois, deer and pig, including promoting hunters’ safety and improving hunting opportunities.

The Game Animal Council will manage our big game resource.  Primarily funded from a levy on the export of trophy heads from New Zealand, the Council will improve the management of the various populations of game animals.

Now, as for those ducks….
