I was honoured to attend the Fire Service’s Christmas thank you to all their staff and volunteers last Sunday. We are extremely lucky to have such dedicated people who think nothing of putting themselves at our disposal when needed. From our full time firefighters to volunteer firemen and the always alert (especially at this time of year) rural fire brigades, all get training that equips them not just for firefighting – but rescue operations, leadership skills, and first aid. These skills translate across to the day to day work of volunteer firemen too – so they become another asset to their workplaces. In summer, when the fire risk is higher, give a thought to those who have to fight these fires and deal with the risk. They deal with the risk, but we can all help lessen it by being careful.
